Mid Atlantic Ridge-Golden Circle Iceland

May 26, 2010

They call Iceland the land of fire and ice for a reason, here you can see part of the convergence of the North American and European tectonic plates.  This part of the mid atlantic ridge is found at Thingvellir National Park.  One of the glaciers we visited was the actual volcano that exploded and stopped air travel all over Europe for over a month.  There is a massive amount of tectonic movement in the region because of the mid atlantic ridge.  The week before we landed in Reykjavik (say that 3 times fast), there was a minor earthquake that split the the road in two.

Our driver Gummi (an Icelandic native) told us about a family that woke up with half of their house missing. Ahh yes… the perks of Icelandic living.  Definitely put the Golden Circle on your list of things to do in Iceland.  If you happen to get hungry dont forget to try Iceland food!  Fish and chips are an Icelandic classic.
