Petting a cheetah was definitely on the top of my things to do list in Africa. Spending more than an hour playing with three cheetahs and racing one afterwards was definitely not in the plan.
My love of Cheetahs goes far beyond the love of a 13 year old’s love for an Iphone, the love of the girls in California for dogs that look like rats, and definitely the love of a fat kid and his fat cake.
I love Cheetahs, get it?
When I first arrived in Zambia and realized that I couldn’t see the Devil’s Pool I immediately asked about the cheetah walk. It was more like a butterfly feeling in your stomach the first time you chased after the ice cream truck if you ask me which I loved every second of.
This was just after I walked a lion and was holding its tail as we walked in the bush. Lions are definitely scarier in person when you see they are about 5 times larger than you.
The Mukuni Big 5 Safari company was nice enough to give me both the cheetah walk and the lion walk free of charge which I can’t thank them enough for. Having been to roughly 40 or 50 countries now as I travel around the world, it is one of my experiences that I will remember forever.
Cheetahs pur about 100 times loader than cats and are gorgeous creatures. They are more solitary in comparison with the very social lion but they were still nice enough to give me a nice cut on my forearm. When they show affection they will lick you and their tongues feel like razor sharp sand paper that you buy at home depot. I really wanted a picture with a cheetah licking my cheek but when it feels like someone is putting a knife to your face I had second thoughts.
I honestly can’t remember how much time I spent with them but it must have been for over an hour. There were three different cheetahs and the next time I see them I promise I will remember their names.
It was amazing when we decided to race one of the cheetahs, I obviously lost that battle before it even started.
I want to give a big shout out to the new volunteer program that the Mukuni Big 5 Safari company has launched and a big thank you to Cliff which is the manager at the safari center in Livingstone, Zambia.
When I come back to Zambia to see the Victoria Falls on high season I am going to consider the volunteer program because the fat kid simply cannot get enough fat cake, I love cheetahs remember? They also have elephants and ___ on the property as well which would be very cool to work with.
