Diving with Sea Lions – Puerto Madryn, Argentina

in Argentina Travel Blog, Argentina video

This is one of the coolest experiences that I have ever had.  I’ve never scuba dived in my life and these guys were just kind enough to let me go full fledged scuba with about 5 minutes worth of training.  Puerto Madryn is a mecca for any animal lover and whether you want to get up close and personal with Penguins at Punta Tombo, whales in Puerto Piramides, or even sea lions in Punta Loma, everything is within a short drive.  I was lucky to have been one of three people on the boat.

Sometimes there are ten or twenty sea lions that are curious that come out to play and other times there are just a handful.  Either way you should still plan to do this unique exeperience, its one of my favorite Argentina Attractions.  We had a great time and I would highly recommend that you try it if you are ever in Puerto Madryn, Argentina.

Looks like a truly incredible experience! I’m a little scared of sea lions, but these ones seem really friendly :)

Sofia it was so amazing.. they would come and play with you and surround you since they love the bubbles. You dont need to be afraid of the women or kids, only the males. They are very territorial but rarely will come out to play like the kids, they have tremendous curiosity!

I was just there a few weeks ago and somehow missed this option. Dang! I did get to see them on the beach and that was pretty cool.

That’s actually how I got hooked diving in the first place! I was covering a resort opening for Newsweek in the Maldives four years ago, and the resort opening was pushed back, so I was on the island with no other guests and nothing to do as it was still partially under construction. The dive center was the only thing complete, so the dive masters took me out on the boat and let me dive for four days with no more than five minutes worth of instruction! Four years later, I’m hooked and have my advanced open water degree =)

But one thing I’ve never done: dive with sea lions! You’re so lucky; what an awesome experience.
