Maasai Ostrich Farm Resort: Nairobi, Kenya

The Ostrich Farm in Nairobi is a great place where you can get up close and personal with ostriches.  It is located roughly an hour away from Nairobi on the outskirts of a city called Kitengela.  The Ostrich Farm is also about 30 minutes away from the Kenya International Airport.  Getting to the farm is a bit tricky but very well worth it.  The farm sits on 200 acres of land and there is a bit more to do at the Ostrich Farm than just ride an Ostrich.

Getting Up Close & Personal In Nairobi

Things To Do At The Ostrich Farm in Nairobi

  • Bird Watching
  • Eat Ostrich Meat
  • Ride an Ostrich
  • Spend a weekend at the Resort
  • Tour the Ostrich Farm
At first I really didn’t think that the tour of the Ostrich farm would be worth but since it was mating season I got an excellent pictures and video of their mating dances.  I got to play “try and peck my finger and camera” with an Ostrich since they are very curious when you walk by.  They also try to eat plastic but that is besides the point.  I don’t know if I would like to spend an entire weekend at the resort but riding an ostrich and eating an Ostrich (irony I know) was just enough for me.
Video of me riding the Ostrich is coming soon!

To get to the Ostrich Farm you want to start at the Nairobi Railway Station.  From there you can look for Matatu number 110 to the city of Kitengela.  Once you arrive at Kitengela you can find a taxi to take you to the Maasai Ostrich Farm.

The farm is roughly 6.5 miles (10km) from Kitengela.  While you will try to get hustled by the taxi driver it should cost 500 Kenyan Shillings from Kitengela to the farm.  Getting there will take roughly 1-1.5 hours on Matatu and Taxi.
  • Via Taxi
A taxi to just the Ostrich Center is going to be very expensive, roughly 3,000 to 4,000 shillings.  You are better off getting a group of friends (or strangers from a hostel) and share a taxi for the entire day.  I shared a taxi with 3 others and it was 4,500 Kenyan Shillings for the entire day.  Due to the distance and traffic you will only be able two things if you decide to go to the Ostrich Farm.  We decided on the Elephant Orphanage since you are only able to visit between 11am and 12am.
