The Nairobi National Park in Kenya is one of the most unique parks in the world. When you enter the park you can see the city walls in the distance as well as the downtown skyscrapers. The western and northern sides of the park are fenced in but the southern part is completely open allowing all of the animals to migrate in and out of the park.
It is the only park in the world that sits inside of a city and also features the world’s cheapest safari for $50.
The park features a large area of both natural and artificial environments. Many of the tourist attractions in Nairobi are centered around the unique ecosystem of the park. Damns have been built along rivers to ensure that there is a permanent water throughout various areas of the park. The park is run by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)
Things to do in Nairobi National Park
Understand that the park is massive in size and most of the tourist attractions in Nairobi are all centered around the park. In the main entrance where you find the KWS headquarters is where you can find various things to do including a game drive to see 4 of the Big 5. Elephants are not in the Nairobi National Park since it isn’t big enough. The activites below are available at the main entrance:
- Animal Orphanage
- Cheapest Safari In Africa All For $40
- Safari Walk
- Boardwalk
Getting to Nairobi National Park
On the map on the top right you will see the city of Nairobi at the very top (Click on map to enlarge). Just to the left of that, under Ngong Forest, you will find the main headquarters of the KWS and also one of the main entrances to the park.
- Via Local Transportation (Matatu)
There aren’t any Matatus that drive directly to the park but there are Matatus that past by the park. Look for the vehicles with route numbers 124 & 125 or any Matatus going along Langata Road. (The park is located on Langata road, see address below). The Matatu should cost 30 Shillings.
- Via Taxi
There are taxis available that can take you to the park either one way or round trip. In order to maximize time (and money) I would highly recommend that you book a taxi for the entire day. The Elephant Orphanage (not the same as animal orphanage), Giraffe Center, and the Karen Blixen Museum are all in the vicinity of the park. The cost for an entire day via taxi should be roughly 4,500 – 5,000 Kenyan Shillings.
