Many people choose Europe as a holiday destination. One of the reasons for this is that there is such a wealth of history and culture across a range of famous old countries … but this also means that working out how to pack it all in can be a logistical nightmare.
This is why choosing a rail excursion can be a great idea; providing a leisurely way to make the most of what several different countries have to offer – and all for a single price tag.
Travelling by train
Imagine having to arrange flights to get from the UK to Germany; then onto Austria before finally arriving in Italy. Apart from the cost, all the hours of waiting around in airports would be wasted time that could take a big chunk out of your getaway.
By choosing a train package such as the Brenner Pass trip you can visit all of these locations in the most relaxed and stylish way possible. Let’s take a look at what it offers:
London
No trip to Europe would be complete without seeing London; one of the most visited cities in the world. History, art, architecture and culture combine and whether you prefer old style pubs or high-end cuisine, there really is something for everyone. From here, you then journey to Munich.
Munich
Munich (München) is the capital of the German region of Bavaria and has a long history. This means that folklore, age-old traditions and a charming provincialism all exist side by side with designer boutiques and high class entertainment.
The Marienplatz is the main square and boasts architecture such as the Glockenspiel and the Old City Hall, which dates back to the 15th century. Museums include world-class collections and the grand avenues, royal palaces and great shopping facilities all add up to provide a unique travel experience.
Innsbruck
The train from Munich travels across Bavaria and then goes over Austrian border. The stunning Alpine mountain scenery leads to the self proclaimed capital of the Alps, Innsbruck. It is city of beauty which is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Attractions in the old town include the famous Goldenes Dach (Golden Roof), the Imperial Church and the Stadtturm, which provides great views of the city.
Brenner Pass
Austria is left behind on the journey to Italy by travelling through the Brenner Pass. It is one of the principal passes of the Alps and also the lowest of the Alpine passes.
However, this doesn’t mean that it lacks stunning views – with valleys beneath and mountains above, everything from snow capped peaks to lowland pine forests are available to view. After passing through this sensational landscape the train skirts around Lake Garda before arriving at Verona.
Verona
The Italian city of Verona was where Shakespeare placed his star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet so it is no surprise that it has the reputation as one of Europe’s most romantic destinations! From the 3rd century BC, Verona was a Roman trade centre and ancient gates, a forum and a grand arena can still be seen today. In fact, the latter is one of the world’s great opera venues!
Apart from the architectural remains of the glory days of the Roman Empire, Verona is an Italian city with much to offer in a modern sense. This means plenty of fine food, fashion and culture. Today, the city is an international commercial centre and a UNESCO World Heritage Site all rolled into one – giving it a unique identity that’s globally recognised.
Back to London
The epic journey ends with a flight from Verona back to London, where once again there is plenty still to explore in one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
