Faces of Madagascar: The Fisherman

A fisherman in Madagascar, fisherman

The people of Madagascar are very different.  You will see how people of all walks of life have combined into one culture as you travel through different regions in Madagascar.  What you see above is a typical fisherman which is also be a canoe driver (seems like everyone is a fisherman in Madagascar).  They typically have long sticks that are roughly 2-3 times the height of the man handling the canoe.

The waters of many rivers in the country are very shallow so they use the sticks and paddles to travel about the river.  One of the things that amazed me is how these guys can work on the canoes in the sun for the entire day only to get up the next day and do it again.  The fisherman/canoe drivers are generally rail thin like the man above and usually are ripped with muscles because of the work they have to put it.
