This picture was taken on the Bolivian side of the Atacama desert. The Bolivians call their side of their side of the desert something different but its still part of the Atacama Desert. This is the tree rock that you find driving from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile over to the popular Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. The Atacama desert is the driest place in the world. Since recorded history there are some places in the desert where it hasn’t rained, thats over 500 years (only since the European arrival, it may actually have been more than that). If you ever get a chance I would highly recommend that you visit the Atacama Desert, its one of the most unique places that I have been to not only in the South America, but in the world.

I love the effect on the photo. I imagine it as a driftwood with a crow or vultures perching on it.
The real essence of the photo was captured by the photographer. It’s simple yet mesmerizing!
Jealous! When I was there they fenced it off because apparently tourists were climbing up the rock- were you one of them? =p
